Abstract

Paulo Freire and the recent history of education in Mexico can not be understood separately. Since 1968, he visited this country with some frequency. His ideas circulated in institutional educational sectors, reduced to simple alphabetizing techniques, and in subversive contexts, where they functioned as a potent vector of social transformation. On the other hand, Mexico facilitated the projection of Freirean thinking on the Spanish-speaking horizon, and enriched it with rural educational experiences that were rooted in the revolutionary project and in indigenous knowledge. In addition, the successive dialogues that he maintained in Cuernavaca with Ivan Illich influenced notably in their respective educative proposals.
